Trustwave's SpiderLabs Security Advisory TWSL2017-011: Lockscreen Lockout Bypass in Elephone P9000 Android Smartphone Published: 06/30/17 Version: 1.1 Vendor: Elephone http://www.elephone.hk/ Product: Elephone P9000 Version affected: 6.0 with latest custom security update from Elephone Product description: The Elephone P9000 was Elephone's flagship smartphone for 2016 that includes custom software instead of a stock android OS. Finding 1: Lockscreen Lockout Bypass Enabled Bruteforce Authentication Bypass CVE: CVE-2017-10709 Credit: Jacob Wilkin of Trustwave There is a logic flaw in the lockscreen of this android device which detects when the correct 4 digit passcode is entered and doesn't require the user to "confirm" the pin with the enter/tick button. So when the wrong password is entered, if it doesn't auto login then an attacker can press backspace to reenter another pin without triggering the lockout functionality which should be triggered after 5 wrong pin attempts. This can be abused to perform bruteforce attacks on a devices pin, bypassing authentication and gaining unauthorised access to a device. It can also be used to bypass the security setting of 10 wrong pin attempts triggering a device wipe. The following video demonstrates the vulnerbility: Remediation Steps: No offical fix is available. It is recommended that a strong login password is in use instead of a 4 or 6 digit pin. This will only increase the amount of time for an attacker to obtain unauthorized access to the device.
